An interview with Lee Andel Dewey, a white nonbinary organizer, HIV/AIDS activist, and abolitionist based in Chicago. They are the founder of LADhoc Accounting, a business providing sliding-scale-to-free accounting, bookkeeping, and consultation servivces to BIPOC- and queer and trans-focused political groups and community organizations. At the time of this interview, they were also the lead organizer and facilitator of CommunityCave Chicago (formerly ManCave,) a Chicago-area support group for transmasculine people. Additionally, they served as treasurer of the board for Upswing Advocates, a board member for Crossroads Fund, and a community advisory board member for AIDS Foundation Chicago. In this oral history interview, Dewey discusses their upbringing and entry into trans community work and politics in Chicago in the 2000s, their time running CommunityCave, and their experiences in street actions and other organizing in abolitionist, pro-Palestinian, and reproductive rights circles in Chicago. Additionally, they discuss their time in GenderQueer Chicago and other trans groups and circles in Chicago, their critiques of the Center on Halsted, and their thoughts on the future.
