Dr. Eli Coleman is a professor and director of the Program in Human Sexuality, one of the first programs in the country of its kind, at the University of Minnesota Medical School, as well as the first endowed chair in sexual health at the University of Minnesota. Coleman describes his experience coming to work at the Program in Human Sexuality almost 40 years ago, the detailed history that goes along with it, and its purpose: providing care, as well as educating medical students and residents on transgender issues. In this history, Coleman describes changes, groundbreaking steps, and the importance of the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Program in Human Sexuality; as well as changes in World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), formerly known as the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association, and the future of care for transgender people.
