Finding aid for the Bromfield Street Educational Foundation (collector) Prison Newsletter Records

The collection contains newsletters created by prisons and organizations in support of prisoners to raise awareness of conditions faced by inmates in the U.S. Penal System. The newsletters include statements, articles, and poetry from prisoners detailing prison conditions and how the conditions affected them. The newsletters also advocate for legal rights for the prison population and support for its gay, lesbian, and transsexual members. The newsletters also acted as information pools for contacts outside of prisons, to connect those incarcerated to organizations that offered services to the inmate population. The majority of the newsletters are from prisons and organizations in support of prisoners located throughout the United States, with a small portion collected from Canada. Included are newsletters provided for female inmates such as No More Cages and The Wimmins Prisoner Survival Network, and newsletters directed towards transsexual prisoners like the Transsexual Voice and Transsexual's in Prison. Examples of newsletters of organizations in support of prisoners include The National Prison Project Journal, Coalition for Prisoners Rights, and The California Prisoner. The majority of the collection consists of single issues, and there are no complete runs of any newsletters.
