Digital Transgender Archive
Lou Sullivan's diary for mid-1981 through mid-1983, following him from the ages of 30-32. Sullivan had achieved many of his medical transition goals at this point, and although he continued to write about his gender identity, dysphoria, and relationships with masculinity and femininity, much of this diary is concerned with his relationships and professional life. He was deeply involved with the second of his life partners, another complex relationship which he analyzed at length. He also wrote of his job at ARCO, including the difficulty of learning masculine white-collar work culture and his frustration with hollow promises of increased responsibility. Louis Graydon Sullivan (1951-1991) was a gay trans man from Milwaukee, WI who lived much of his adult life in San Francisco. A diarist, amateur historian, and administrative assistant, Sullivan is best known for the detailed and thoughtful diary he kept from childhood until his death from AIDS at age 39.
