Content Warning: This item contains potentially sensitive material related to suicide and sexual assault. Excerpts from Lou Sullivan's diaries for 1972-1974, selected and typed by Sullivan in the late 1980s. The excerpts detail Sullivan's life and relationships in his early twenties, including a long-term boyfriend with whom he had a complex relationship, as well as various shorter-term connections. Sullivan was becoming involved in queer community through Milwaukee's Gay People's Union (GPU). He was also increasingly comfortable with describing himself as a transvestite and recognizing common ground with lesbians and transfeminine people. Louis Graydon Sullivan (1951-1991) was a gay trans man from Milwaukee, WI who lived much of his adult life in San Francisco. A diarist, amateur historian, and administrative assistant, Sullivan is best known for the detailed and thoughtful diary he kept from childhood until his death from AIDS at age 39.
