Harold Chapman, in drag, stands looking askance at the camera with one hand raised wearing a floral and lace dress, heels, and a pearl necklace. Mark Leslie is sitting on the floor wearing all black clothing and blackface make-up, with arms and legs outstretched in a doll-like pose. He is dressed as a golliwog, which was a popular doll based on anti-Black caricatures from the Minstrel Tradition. Chapman and Leslie were members of the 56th (London) Division concert party, called Bow Bells, which was particularly active on the French front from 1916.
